What is sleep disorder?

What are the different types of sleep disorders?

Insomnia

The most widespread form of sleep disorder, insomnia, is characterised by difficulty falling or staying asleep. The length and frequency of insomnia are variable. One in ten adults and almost 50% of adults, respectively, suffer from chronic insomnia. Insomnia can develop on its own or be linked to physical or mental health issues.   • Difficulty in concentrating on things

In a 2014 appearance on Dr. Oz, Jenifer Aniston disclosed that she has trouble going to sleep at night. Unfortunately, she also admitted to using a sleep tracking software (which is not advisable). Fortunately, it seems that she has changed for the better; in an interview with Arianna Huffington in 2016, Aniston said that she now avoids using her phone before night and uses relaxation methods like yoga to promote sleep.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a potentially deadly sleep disorder that disturbs breathing while a person is asleep. People with untreated sleep apnea repeatedly cease breathing while they are asleep. The body absorbs less oxygen as a result of this significant medical issue. You might wake up in the middle of the night as a result. An estimated 2 to 15% of middle-aged adults and more than 20% of older adults suffer from sleep apnea. Obesity and having a history of sleep apnea in the family are the main risk factors for this condition.

Very renowned Bollywood singer, "Bappi Lahiri," passed away from obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and recurring chest infections were the issues that Bappi Lahiri was dealing with.

Restless Leg Syndrome

The symptoms of restless legs syndrome include the impulse to move one's legs along with unpleasant leg sensations that are frequently characterised as creeping, crawling, tingling, burning, or itching. Resting, such as lying down in bed, or sitting for a long time, like while driving or in the office, causes this. Symptoms include daytime fatigue, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. A person with restless legs syndrome may have trouble falling asleep and may frequently wake up during the night, both of which can contribute to daytime sleepiness.

Between 2% – 7.2% of the population are thought to be affected with restless legs syndrome, which often first appears in the adolescent or early twenties.

Narcolepsy

A neurological sleep disorder known as narcolepsy interferes with sleep and alertness control. "Sleep attacks" that happen when a person is awake are a symptom of narcolepsy. The result will be unexpected drowsiness and exhaustion.

The condition can potentially result in sleep paralysis, which could leave you physically immobile as soon as you wake up. This condition can arise on its own, but it's frequently linked to other neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis. The beginning of narcolepsy typically takes place between the ages of 15 and 25, though it can happen at any age. Narcolepsy is frequently undetected and, thus, mistreated.
